My mother-in-law (76) was just recently Dx. with Myeloma stage 3. Doctor said one site- in the back- with mass pressing on the nerve causing severe pain. He also mentioned a leasion on the breast plate. I'm not sure what placed her in stage 3 we were waiting for blood and urine test results, I think he based the decision on them. She has diabetes (not on insulin), hypertension, Gallbladder problems, fx's of the back with arthritis and kidney stones. Could she be a canidate for the treatment you have at the clinic there. We live in Ohio so it is a long way there but if she could come there and be treated it may be worth it. She has medicare and a little income. OSU in Columbus has a department using clinical trail treatments. Is that something we should look into? Can you help in any way? Thank you, God be with you! |

Hi Diana, We do accept Medicare patients at Huntsman, so I would definitely suggest that you contact our intake person, Debbie Coleman, at 801-587-4652 or via e-mail at debbie.coleman@hci.utah.edu. Because of your mother-in-law's age (76), she is not likely to be a candidate for many clinical trials because many of them have a cut-off age of 65 years. However, it is possible to get some of those drugs on a compassionate use basis from the pharmaceutical companies, so I don't want you to get discouraged after reading this. In the mean time, though, there are several excellent front-line treatments that are FDA-approved and that your mother-in-law could be a candidate for. I hope that you will consider a consult at the Huntsman Cancer Institute, but where ever you decide to go for treatment, we wish your family the very best. Annick |
