Hi everyone,

We've had several patients and caregivers who are preparing to travel and go through an outpatient autologous stem cell transplant away from home ask us what they should bring from home or buy when they are here to make sure their stay runs as smoothly as possible.

We have a list of things including a body and food thermomter, antibacterial wipes and hand sanitizer to make sure their environment stays as clean and germ-free as possible, new toiletries, mouthwash for mouth problems associated with chemo, a diary and/or tape recorder to keep track of what health care professionals tell them, a wig or hat to protect the scalp from the sun, comfortable clothes and shoes, and something to keep them occupied or help them relax (books, games, music, blanket, pillow, etc.)

If you are a patient who has gone through an autologous stem cell transplant away from home, please let us know what kinds of items have helped you so we can add to the list.

Then we can pass your ideas and advice on to future patients, who I'm sure will really appreciate it!

Thanks,

Your Myeloma Chat Moderator at Huntsman Cancer Institute

I'll try to get things rolling.  Don't know if these items are worthy of adding to a clinic list, but I'll toss them out there.

- Glad Simply Cooking Microwave Steaming Bags (great for steaming your veggies)

- Cheese slicer (so you can buy a brick of cheese)

- A few plastic tuffies (those things you scrub pots/pans with.  Use them to scrub your veggies and fruits with)

- Can opener

- Little picnic size salt container for mouth care

For stem cell collection D-Pace, if you don't have a chest port, bring large loose sleeved shirts so you can slide your chemo bag through.

Also, bring a few wrapped pieces of cinnimom or peppermint candy to slip in a plastic bag with your mask.  They're not for eating, but believe me, it will help keep your mask smelling fresh.

I also like having a couple of small bean bag pillows to shape/position for bettering comfort while sitting around with the D-PACE bag.

Go get em!
