Thank you for sharing your experiences.  My mother had MM and  I am learning about the options available if I were to be diagnosed with it in the future.  She went undiagnosed probably for a long time as she was 84 when it was discovered.  Blood tests she had several years prior never lead her physician to perform the bone marrow tests but looking back he did tell me that it was probably and indicator.  I am very interested in the transplants as these were never an option for my mother.  Thank you for sharing as this is always on my mind.  My grandfather had leukemia of the bone marrow so I will be looking to this site for information.  It is good to have this information because I will want the latest available procedures.

Hi Donna,

I am one of the research coordinators at Huntsman, and I wanted to comment briefly on your entry.  Aside from your mother and grandfather, are there any other family members, genetically related to you, that have or have had a blood cancer (like leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma) With two family members that have had a blood cancer, it's possible that there's a genetic predisposition or that it's just chance, but if there are more family members with this type of history, it might definitely be in your best interest to have some testing done and develop a monitoring plan of your bloodwork.

That is what I have been thinking.  My mother and grandfather are the only ones that I am aware of.  I know my mother had blood work done that showed she had a different "sedimentation rate" than she should have.  I go to the same physician she went to.  When she was 84 her rheumatologist tested that her blood was anemic.  When I got her to er she was very low on blood.  When they hospitalized her that is when they did the actual bone marrow test.  I have severe pain in my bones and fibromyalgia.  My concern is that I am being overlooked.  When it is very cold in winter I have pain in my entire skeleton when I am outside.

Hi Donna,

If you have bone pain that doesn't get better with over-the-counter pain medications, I think it would be in your best interest to seek a second opinion from another physician, especially if you have the feeling that you are being "overlooked."
