I am now 56 female that was diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma in Nov. 2006. I had complained of foggy vision to my Optometrist, he treated it as dry eye...for three more months my eyes stayed the same. I went back to him and he then sent me to an eye specialist. After multiple tests, a biopsy on my cornea, contacting the specialist in Philadelphia, I was asked to have a blood test and urine test. I then had an appointment to receive my results and was told I had Multiple Myeloma BUT it is not related to my eyes. I have been followed with blood work, every three - four months and I have had bone marrow biopsies, urine tests, skeletal studies over the two years. My hbg. IgG, and protein levels have stayed in steady levels.
My question to anyone out there is, has anyone had a diagnosis like this? When the Optometrist Specialist looked at my eyes , they said they have thousands of crystals.
I have been looking on line for something similar as there is not one doctor that has clearly said it is related to the myeloma.
Thanks and looking forward to an answer.

It's possible that the crystals in your eyes are amyloid proteins, as amyloidosis is a condition that can accompany myeloma and essentially is a disease in which large amounts of proteins are deposited in organs. Although not as common, this protein accumulation can occur in the eyes.
I'm not sure where you are located, but I would make an appointment with an opthalmologist that's located at an academic university that specializes in treating myeloma and related diseases. He/she will have an expertise that you may not find in an opthalmologist or optometrist not used to seeing myeloma patients in their practice.

| Thank you for your response. I am in London Ontario Canada and I have been seeing specialists at the Ivey Institute in London. I have also had tests for amyloydosis and they have been negative so far. I get my eyes examined annually by a Opthamologist at the Ivey Institute.

| Hi Marg52 ~ I was diagnosed with MM in July 2003, have been treated at Jefferson Hosp, received 2 SCT in 2004, been in 5 different chemotherapies (VAD, Cytoxin, Melphalan, Velcade and now, in my 22nd cycle, Revlilmid). You live in the Philly area (I live in South Jersey) and care to chat or talk about MM? Please feel to contact me at my e-mail: michael_kuhn2001@yahoo.com -or- micus52@gmail.com . I have been ill for the past month (from 12/30/2008 until about a week ago) due to various illnesses and infections, including upper respiratory infection, noro-virus, high fever (103), infections in both eyes and most recently I have been on antibiotic for 10 days due to a left ear infection. My primary doctor wanted to stop taking my chemo, but both my onc and stem-cell onc at Jeff said not to, as my white count and blood counts have been very good and my stem-cell onc said if I cease taking Revlimid, that my MM could return. I am doing much better this week. M I K E
