Are there any diet no-nos for myeloma? I was diagnosed in April of 2008. I can't seem to find much on what you should or should not eat. I read the book Fighting Cancer with Nutrition and have tried to not eat sugar, white flour, white rice and potatoes. Does this help or am I wasting my time?

Hi Jackie,

I work for the Myeloma Program at Huntsman Cancer Institute and asked our director, Dr. Tricot, about your question. He says he just generally recommends a well-balanced diet and tells patients to stay away from fast food. Supplements like a multi-vitamin, calcium, and vitamin D will serve you well, too.

If you're going through treatment and your immune system is compromised, it's good to turn to deep frozen foods or canned foods instead of fresh vegetables or fruits for a while. It's harder to clean fresh veggies and fruits, so there's a higher risk of food borne illness involved.

If you want to learn more about eating safely while going through treatment, our podcast on nutrition might help you. Here is the link to it:

Take care!

Thank you so much for your response. I think I was going overboard about what not to eat. I think maybe I can relax a bit. Thank you again.
