Should patients with suppressed immune systems get the H1N1 shot in addition to the standard flu shot?

If a person has had the H1N1, will their rather new immune systems develop antibodies to help fight future episodes?

Should patients with suppressed immune systems be on Tamiflu as a prophylaxis?

For those of us who watch our blood work, it might be helpful to know when we're no longer in a "suppressed" state.

Is a suppressed immune system those with a CD +3 +4  count less than 500.  Or, would a suppressed immune system be defined as IgA, IgG, IgM less than normal?   Either/Neither?

Thank you

Doug

Hi Doug,

According to Dr. Tricot, the Director of the Huntsman Cancer Institute Myeloma Clinic, there is no general agreement on this among physicians.

He personally recommends the following:

1. For patients who have not had H1N1 flu and are at least 6 weeks post-transplant, have an injectable vaccine asap, irrespective of the CD4 count. Never have the nasal vaccine.

2. Patients who have had proven H1N1 flu are very unlikely to benefit from a vaccine.

3. Patients who are immuno-suppressed, have a fever of greater than 100 with symptoms such as runny nose, nasal congestion, sore throat, cough, malaise and/or muscle pain should go on tamiflu asap. A 10 to 14 course is probably advisable rather than a 5 day course.

Have a great weekend everyone!

Thank you for the response.   I'll get a better understanding of the Immunoglobulins (IgA, IgG, IgM) and CD 3+ and 4+ at my next appointment.   I believe I understand both independently, but not the correlation...as far as being immune suppressed or not.

Thank you very much and I hope all is well.

Denese and Kim,

I have not talked to you since I read your blog and was wondering if everything was still good with you. I know from reading your blog you went through some trying times but, I also know that you all are resilient. I hope that you are enjoying life now and that you both are feeling great. Hope life is treating you well and enjoying Ca. I know that the climate will help a lot. Take care and God bless.

Ps. I have not got anymore info than I had the last time I talked to you. I really need to know what to look for and I don't. I am bone pain especially if I do anything or walk much. I went to Orthopaedic with my knee that he had done surgery and he though it was my back and did MRI said I had bone spurs in lower and sent me to Neurosurgeon and he said he was going to treat me as if I had pinched nerve for a week with methylprednisolone. He sent me to another one after I had another full body bone scan, MRI and Cat scan on my head and this one said the tumors was ok and that he was a little confused and called my oncologist and talked to him and then told me that he would still be treating me which he did not make any sense to me. Because I told him that I had an appointment on Dec. 3, with him already. So when I go back to him I am going to question him about some of this and see if I can get some answers. If not I am going to see about getting to the Huntsman and see what is going on. I just don't want the doctors to let me go to far before they let me know exactly what is going on but, they seem to get around telling me. I would have already been to Huntsman if it was not so far. Just being able to read and talk to you and others who have this makes me know that there is more help out there. Thanks for listening.
