I  have  asymptomatic myeloma or mgus  and recently turned 50. I am confused about my recent diagnosis of osteopenia. How do I know if is part of going through menopause or the affects of myeloma. Could this be a sign that it is going to progress?

Hi Pamela,

The director of the Huntsman Cancer Institute Myeloma Program has this response to your question:

"If you have osteopenia due to menopause, the dexa scan will show a similar amount of osteopenia in the distal radius (where there typically is no myeloma) as in the spine and femur (where there typically is or was myeloma). If the osteopenia is due to myeloma, the bone density of the distal radius will be much closer to normal, while the spine and femur will be abnormal."

I didn't have a bone density test. They did the skelatal survey and that is when I was told I had osteopenia. To my understanding the distal radius is not included in the X-rays I had done. So I am still confused about the osteopenia and what it may mean about my asymptomatic myeloma.  Should I have a MRI or CT scan rather then the skelatal survey that I did have done?

In our opinion, a DEXA scan can give you the answers you are looking for and is the best way to evaluate your osteopenia.
