My husband just had his second SCT on the 8th.  He did okay, not withstanding the nasty smell from DMSO.  Since this round of high dose chemo that began on May 4th he seems much more weird as in 'chemo brain.'  He just simply isn't thinking very clearly.  Is this a normal and will it go away soon?

Hi Denese,

As you know, the transplant 2 regimen is more toxic (i.e. has more side effects) than our transplant 1 regimen.  I suspect that the "chemo brain" as you describe it is not necessarily an effect of the chemotherapies but either an effect of the anti-emetic regimen he's on or because some his electrolytes are out of whack, which can sometimes manifest in confusion.  Please know that you and your husband are in our thoughts, and I hope that these symptoms resolve soon.  Annick

Hmmm, maybe it's an accumulation of all the chemo.  If I remember right, during the period between transplants, there is a maintenance cycle of thalidomide and dex.  Then, when it's transplant time, more dex, velcade, and the high dose stuff.  Personally, all the dex sends me into la la land...hate the stuff.  I'm pretty sure I was quieter...less to say [if you can imagine]...during the second transplant.  Everything was so predictable the second round.  I'd be willing to bet most are a bit more "weird" ...sure have reason to be.  Heck, I think I even glowed in the dark at one point  ;-)

Oh, lets not forget how the BCNU fries the skull for about 15 mins..."this is your brain on BCNU" kind of deal.  Wow, that stuff had a kick!

Continued success to you both

Doug
