My 52 year old husband was diagnosed with multiple myeloma in April 2007, he started chemo in may 2007 but his oncologist stopped the treatment until 7months latter. by the time the treatment was started he has lost 5” of his natural height. I am worried because He’s gone through 5courses of chemo and he is still in serious pains. They have referred him for radiation therapy. Is it possible to regain his height. If not will he be in constant pain? What can be done to help him. He has Maryland Medicaid

i have lost some height myself from the spinal cord compressing..i have constant mri's to check for compression fractures and if he sees an orthopaedic or spine specialist they have procedures to lift the discs up so that could i spose give him some height back.

good luck dear with all you do and i know its hard to be a caregiver as my husband is my caregiver and sometimes he just doesnt know what to do.

Your husband may want to consider interventions like a procedure known as kyphoplasty. Kyphoplasty treats spinal fractures and helps restore the height of compressed vertebra, so it is indeed possible for him to regain his height.

You can read more about this procedure at the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation's website:

http://www.multiplemyeloma.org/treatments/3.07.04.php

It is important to note that this procedure in no way treats the myeloma. Rather, it only treats the issues associated with pain and fractures that result from myeloma.

Take care,
